Thompson Williams is a nationally known award-winning artist. He is a member of the Caddo Nation, born in 1956 to the late Melford and Winona Wells Williams. It was through the stories of their childhood that Thompson learned the richness of his culture. Thompson was fortunate to be part of a very artistic family. His father and brothers were all very talented artists. However, his sister first began teaching him the beauty of art. Thompson continued to learn the techniques of his craft throughout high school and college but did not embark on a career in art. Instead, Thompson has concentrated his efforts in the field of education. Thompson is a graduate of Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma. Thompson is employed as a T.A. II in Special Education at Edmond North High School. He is certified to teach art and special education by the state of Oklahoma. It was only after his wife’s uncle entered him in a three-person art show in Dallas, Texas did the idea of doing art seriously take root. Thompson’s paintings depict native people historically and in contemporary society. James Coburn of The Edmond Sun says, “Mind, body and spirit integrate holistically in Thompson’s brushstrokes. His creativity seems organic, flowing from a deep personal reservoir.” The artist says, “My paintings focus on the spiritual heritage of my ancestors. One thing we don’t get to see much is our involvement with the spirit residing inside each individual.” Thompson shows the pride he has in his native people by using a wide variety of painting styles to express the feelings conveyed by each painting.
